Macular Degeneration
Macular Degeneration
Macular degeneration is a challenging condition in which the central part of the retina — the tissue at the back of the eye — becomes unhealthy. Because this central area is affected, it’s your central vision that becomes degraded, making tasks like reading and recognizing faces more difficult.
Traditional treatment has centered on nutrition and targeted supplements, and for many years, the more severe “wet” form of the disease has been treated successfully with eye injections. Preserving sight for patients with macular degeneration is one of my strongest areas of focus — we follow our patients closely and stay current on exactly which nutrients and habits help slow its progression. There are also exciting new therapies emerging that don’t just slow the breakdown of the retina, but actually show real improvement.
